Trivia: By the time six-year-old Thora Birch made her feature film debut with a small role in Purple People Eater (1988), she was already a veteran television actress with two years' worth of commercial and series work under her diminutive belt. Probably best known up to that point for her work opposite über-grandad Wilford Brimley in a Quaker Oats commercial, Birch went on to grow up in front of the camera, evolving from Monkey Trouble's moppet with a primate to a bras and boys-obsessed teeny bopper in Now and Then to Kevin Spacey's rebellious daughter in American Beauty. Birch, who was born in Los Angeles on March 11, 1982, first attracted sizable notice for her role as Elijah Wood's tomboy friend in Paradise, a 1991 family drama that also starred Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson. Afterwards, her visibility began to increase, first with a supporting role as Harrison Ford's daughter in Patriot Games (1992) (which she reprised in 1994's Clear and Present Danger), and then as one of the three kids who inadvertently bring three witches back to life in Hocus Pocus (1993).The actress got her first chance to play a teenaged role in the aforementioned Now and Then (1995), a coming-of-age drama that cast her as the younger version of Paradise co-star Melanie Griffith. Neither that film, nor Birch's subsequent project, Alaska (1996), made a great impact among critics or audiences, and it was not until the actress was cast in American Beauty (1999) that her career really began to accelerate. After the success of American Beauty, Birch -- who also had an uncredited role in that same year's Anywhere but Here -- was suddenly busy with a number of projects. Trivia: A prolific film, television, and theater actress, Megan Follows became a TV star as Anne Shirley in Canadian television's adaptation of L.M. Montgomery's popular Anne of Green Gables books. Born in Toronto to two actors, Follows began acting on TV as a toddler. After she appeared in several Canadian features and shows, and made her American movie debut in Stephen King's Silver Bullet (1985), her performance as Montgomery's feisty redheaded orphan in the acclaimed 1985 miniseries Anne of Green Gables and the 1987 sequel Anne of Avonlea won her two Gemini awards and made her an international name. Supposedly putting her career-making turn as Anne behind her, Follows continued to act in plays and movies throughout the 1980s and early '90s, including TV movies Sin of Innocence (1986) with a young Dermot Mulroney, Inherit the Wind (1988), and Back to Hannibal: The Return of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn (1990) (as a grown up Becky Thatcher). The versatile actress also played Anne of Green Gables co-star Colleen Dewhurst's daughter in the grim Canadian drama Termini Station (1991), and voiced the role of Clara in the animated feature The Nutcracker Prince (1990). Follows devoted the rest of the 1990s to starting a family, acting in Canadian TV movies and starring in the Canadian feature comedy Reluctant Angel (1997). She began the next decade, though, by reprising her most famous role (as a now fully adult, aspiring writer in New York) in Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story (2000).

Trivia: Frances Sternhagen was still in her teens when she made her first professional stage appearance as the thirtyish Laura in a 1948 summer-stock production of The Glass Menagerie. After graduating from Vassar with a BA degree in drama, Frances attended the Perry-Mansfield School of the Theatre and New York's Neighborhood Playhouse. She briefly worked as a teacher at Massachussett's Milton Academy before her off-Broadway debut as Juliette in Girardoux' Thieves' Carnival--one of the last times that this dynamic character actress would ever portray a flighty ingenue. She went on to spend several seasons at the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. Back in New York, Sternhagen won two Obie Awards for her performances in Admirable Bashville and The New Pinter Plays, and in 1973 received the Tony Award for her multiple characterizations in Neil Simon's Good Doctor 1973. She followed this personal triumph by creating two of her all-time favorite stage roles: Dora in Equus (1974) and Ethel Thayer in On Golden Pond (1979). Launching her film career in 1967, Sternhagen has been seen in an exhausting variety of movie roles; among the best of these was no-nonsense Dr. Marion Lazarus in Outland (1982), matching wits and witticisms with outer-space peacekeeper Sean Connery. On television, Frances Sternhagen enjoyed sizable roles on such daytime dramas as Love of Life, One Life to Live, Secret Storm, and was seen on a regular basis in the prime-time series Spencer (1985, as Millie Sprague), Stephen King's the Golden Years (1991, as Gina Williams) and The Road Home (1994, as Charlotte Babineaux).
