From Captain America to Iron Man, On TV Tonight ranks the very best Marvel movies streaming on Disney+ right now.
10. CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER
What we think: After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, we find Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy – the Winter Soldier.

What we think: The talented Taika Waititi steps up to direct this Marvel adventure where Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok – the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization – at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. To help fight Ronan and his team and save the galaxy from his power, Quill creates a team of space heroes known as the “Guardians of the Galaxy” to save the galaxy.
Director: JAMES GUNN
Cast: CHRIS PRATT, ZOE SALDANA, DAVE BAUTISTA, VIN DIESEL, BRADLEY COOPER, DJIMON HOUNSOU, JOHN C. REILLY
7. IRON MAN
What we think: Robert Downey Jr found a whole new audience when he took on the role of Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist and genius inventor who is kidnapped and forced to build a devastating weapon. Instead, using his intelligence and ingenuity, Tony builds a high-tech suit of armour and escapes captivity. When he uncovers a nefarious plot with global implications, he dons his powerful armour and vows to protect the world as Iron Man.
Director: JON FAVREAU
Cast: ROBERT DOWNEY JR., TERRENCE HOWARD, JEFF BRIDGES, GWYNETH PALTROW, PAUL BETTANY, JON FAVREAU
6. DOCTOR STRANGE
What we think: Benedict Cumberbatch shows his acting versatility as Marvel’s talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilising a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Director: SCOTT DERRICKSON
Cast: BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH, CHIWETEL EJIOFOR, RACHEL MCADAMS, BENEDICT WONG, MADS MIKKELSEN, TILDA SWINTON
5. BLACK PANTHER
What we think: There are some memorable action scenes in this Marvel drama where the late Chadwick Boseman’s Prince T’Challa returns home to the reclusive, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to serve as his country’s new king, after the events of Captain America: Civil War. However, T’Challa soon finds that he is challenged for the throne from factions within his own country. When two foes conspire to destroy Wakanda, the hero known as Black Panther must team up with C.I.A. agent Everett K. Ross and members of the Dora Milaje, Wakandan special forces, to prevent Wakanda from being dragged into a world war.
Director: RYAN COOGLER
Cast: CHADWICK BOSEMAN, MICHAEL B. JORDAN, MARTIN FREEMAN, LUPITA NYONG’O, FOREST WHITAKER, ANGELA BASSETT
4. THE AVENGERS
What we think: When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins. Enter The Avengers: Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow.

3. AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON
What we think: Great to see James Spader stepping up as the adversary Ultron in this sequel where Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program. But things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to the Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure.
Director: JOSS WHEDON
Cast: ROBERT DOWNEY JR., CHRIS HEMSWORTH, MARK RUFFALO, CHRIS EVANS, SCARLETT JOHANSSON, JEREMY RENNER, JAMES SPADER, SAMUEL L. JACKSON
2. AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR
What we think: Surely this must be a rarity having over twenty main characters in one film. Here we have the Avengers and their allies continuing to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, where a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. A despot of intergalactic infamy, his goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones, artifacts of unimaginable power, and use them to inflict his twisted will on all of reality. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment, the fate of Earth and existence has never been more uncertain.
Director: ANTHONY RUSSO, JOE RUSSO
Cast: ROBERT DOWNEY JR. CHRIS HEMSWORTH, MARK RUFFALO, SCARTLETT JOHANSSON, DON CHEADLE, TOM HOLLAND, CHADWICK BOSEMAN
1. CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR
What we think: There’s plenty of great action sequences, special effects and some comedy thrown in when Steve Rogers leads the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps – one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.
Director: ANTHONY RUSSO, JOE RUSSO
Cast: ROBERT DOWNEY JR. CHRIS EVANS, SEBASTIAN STAN, SCARTLETT JOHANSSON, DON CHEADLE, TOM HOLLAND, CHADWICK BOSEMAN
If we were only given these movies to rank in our preferred order, I would still find it difficult to decide.
I didn’t like Deadpool, I loved Toby Maguire as Spiderman (but Spiderman is owned by Sony), I loved the Hulk, but not on the list. I loved the X-Men, expecially the Woverine series, but I don’t know if is on Disney + (just checking the app on my Tablet) and the X-Men and Wolverine/Logan are available but not on the list.
Other than the Avengers and DC’s Jutice League, the Fantastic Four was my next favourite. It is on Disney + . Compilers of the list must have made an error in compilling the list. The Fantastic Four comic book series has been called “The Great American Novel.” Do a Google search under The Fantastic Four as the great American novel, and you will learn why it is called that.
No Antman/Antman and Wasp. I thought Michael Douglas was quite good as Henry/Hank Pym.
Okay, the Avengers hold all of the top spots, then Dr Strange, then Thor, and finally at 11 or 12 is Black Panther.
You think Infinity War is better than Black Panther? Seriously? I fell asleep during Infinity War, it was at least 30 minutes too long.
