WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

We’ll start off the list with the most talked about series of the moment, which has won so many awards there’s not enough room to list them. The extremely talented Stephen Graham co-writes and stars in this confronting drama series, but the standout performance comes from Oscar winner Owen Cooper in his first starring TV role, as Jamie Miller. He is remarkable. We follow 13-year-old Jamie who is accused of the murder of a classmate. His family, therapist and the detective in charge are all left asking what really happened. As they delve into the activities of Jamie and his friends, they find an alarming trend, which most parents are unaware of, as their children spend most of their time online locked away in their rooms. A thought-provoking story with an excellent ensemble cast, which is highly recommended.

THE KOMINSKY METHOD

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

This comedy series won two 2019 Golden Globes and was an instant hit for this viewer as it has two of the best in Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin as best friends Sandy and Norman. The banter between them is funny, witty and appears effortless. Sandy is an actor who made it big a long time ago and who now is an acting coach at his studio named after himself, “The Kominsky Method.” His best friend and agent, Norman, loses his wife to cancer, which leaves both of them questioning their existence as they struggle through choices and relationships, old and new. Great to see Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito teaming up once again with Michael Douglas. There are three seasons to binge-watch.

EMILY IN PARIS

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

Comedy, fashion, travel and romance. This 2021 Golden Globe nominated series has it all and with Paris as the backdrop you can’t go wrong here. There have been mumblings about the lead character, Emily (Lily Collins), being a little annoying in her attitude to France and the French, but she does temper this as the story progresses. Emily is a young American woman from the Midwest who is hired by a marketing firm in Paris to provide them with an American perspective on things. Of course, she comes up against all the usual office politics and the way business is conducted by her French colleagues. But the clothes are gorgeous, and the Paris streets and restaurants are charming, and the guy downstairs in her apartment building is gorgeous, which makes up for all the negative reactions Emily at first receives.

AGATHA CHRISTIE’S SEVEN DIALS

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

I have been reading Agatha Christie since my teenage years, which were quite a long time ago, and here I am still watching her stories. I have watched countless versions, so I was a little sceptical about yet another. It does not always stick faithfully to the plotline of the original novel, but it is quite enjoyable on the whole until… I was disappointed by the plot twist, but you may not be. But I will watch Martin Freeman in anything as he’s one of my favourite boys, and the always delightful Helena Bonham Carter.

SIMON COWELL: THE NEXT ACT - DOCUMENTARY

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

I have to confess I know very little about Simon Cowell. However, a friend dropped around and wanted to watch it, so I conceded. It was interesting for me as it was all fresh and I did learn a lot about Simon and boy bands. The auditions became a bit boring, and then to go through all that and change the scenario at the end was a bit odd, but there you go. Everyone’s got talent.

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

This series from France and Germany is from Julie Orringer’s historical novel The Flight Portfolio, some of which is based on fact. In 1940, American journalist Varian Fry travelled to Marseille with a list of anti-Nazi imperiled artists and writers he hoped to help escape within a few weeks. Instead, he stayed more than a year, working to procure false documents, amass emergency funds, and arrange journeys across Spain and Portugal, where the refugees would embark for safer ports. The race against time to save them is a tale of forbidden love, high-stakes adventure, and unimaginable courage as Fry and his colleagues risked their own lives to save others. An interesting, largely unknown story.

THE DIPLOMAT

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

This political thriller garnered a number of 2025 Golden Globe nominations. Rufus Sewell was the drawcard for this viewer as he’s always excellent and this is no exception. Sewell stars as former ambassador Hal Wyler, who struggles with his lack of input when his wife becomes the US Ambassador to the UK. Keri Russell stars as Kate Wyler who, in the midst of an international crisis, lands the high-profile job for which she is not really suited, which has implications for her marriage and her political future. Producer Debora Cahn began her career with The West Wing so this one has a good pedigree going for it. There are three seasons available.

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

There are six seasons of this excellent series to binge watch, which garnered three 2026 Golden Globe nominations. If you have qualms about technology, the stories here may provoke alarm. I’m starting from the beginning here. This superb anthology series explores a twisted, high-tech multiverse where humanity’s greatest innovations and darkest instincts collide. There are many excellent actors involved in this series.

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

I have watched countless cooking series as my son is chef and it’s a requirement if you’re a chef’s mum. I must say I’ve learnt a lot. But I have to say, Matty Matheson’s screeching voice was just too much for me. I don’t care about the foul language, after all I have seen Gordon Ramsay in full swing. Then I remembered Matheson was in The Bear, and I found him very annoying in that! But perhaps you will like his style.

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

Sex, full frontal nudity, drugs, violence, language etc. If you cannot handle any of this, this is not for you. This comedy action series is at the top of the list for a reason. I absolutely loved this one and have never laughed so much. You cannot take anything literally here, although there are a couple of sombre events which take place. This is a politically incorrect, silly tale that cannot be taken seriously. It all starts out with a bomb, followed by a bowl of guacamole at a party and more bombs. The basic story is that of an elite special forces team who thwarts a deadly threat to Las Vegas. After their celebratory party, filled with booze, drugs and sex, the team discovers that the bomb they deactivated was a fake. The team now has to fight through their impairments, overcome their personal issues, find the real bomb, and save the world. A simple task one would think. My personal favourite would have to be C. Thomas Howell’s bomb disposer, Haggerty. Hilarious. Excellent soundtrack to all the mayhem makes this highly entertaining.
