HAVE A GOOD TRIP: ADVENTURES IN PSYCHEDELICS - DOCUMENTARY

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

It’s not often celebrities will open up to their drug taking in the media unless they are caught out by accident. In this film quite a few are prepared to expose their experiences with LSD, good and bad. Carrie Fisher reveals all in her hilarious fashion. Hallucinations are brought to life with trippy special effects and animation and there are parodies of the “Just Say No” campaign. It explores the history and pop culture impact through to the therapeutic possibilities of psychedelics. Critics were not kind, but perhaps their opinion was clouded by too many bad trips. There is a comedic aspect to even the most serious subjects.

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

Adapted from Shelby Van Pelt’s bestselling novel, this heartwarming drama is one of the best on Netflix. It features the voice of Alfred Molina as Marcellus, the highly intelligent and cynical giant Pacific octopus. Sally Field is wonderful as grieving elderly widow Tova Sullivan who works the night shift cleaning the aquarium in the coastal town of Sowell Bay, who forms an unexpected close bond with Marcellus, a captive octopus who quietly observes the humans around him. At the heart of the story is a decades-old mystery pertaining to Tova, which Marcellus intends to solve. Superb viewing.

FATHER FIGURES

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

The presence of Owen Wilson led to the viewing of this road-trip comedy film where fraternal twin brothers Kyle and Peter discover that their mother lied to them about their father’s death, and she confesses that due to the wild nature of the 1970s, she isn’t entirely sure who their biological father is. This prompts them to embark on a cross-country journey to find their real dad. Kyle is a laid-back, wealthy model; Peter is an uptight, divorced proctologist, and this alone leads to hilarious comedic situations along the way. The film wasn’t well received by critics, but viewers appear to have embraced it in spite of this. Cameos from J.K. Simmons and Christopher Walken are a highlight.

LADIES FIRST

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

The ensemble cast is enough to prompt a viewing of this romantic comedy, but alas it does fall short with a cliché-ridden script and rather stilted performances. It is inspired by the French film I Am Not an Easy Man and may have worked better in that language. It’s a satirical look at the gender-swap scenario where a chauvinistic marketing executive hits his head and wakes up in an alternate reality where women hold all the societal power and men are treated as the “inferior” sex. This could be offensive to some, but it is comedic and not to be taken seriously.

CRAZY STUPID LOVE

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

Romantic comedies can be fraught with cliches and usually end up like any other soap opera, but here we have a refreshing departure from that, which could be due to Ryan Gosling heading up the talented ensemble cast. Steve Carell stars as Cal Weaver, a middle-aged man whose seemingly perfect life unravels when his high school sweetheart now wife, Emily, confesses to an affair and asks for a divorce. Cal is taken under the wing of Jacob, a suave, smooth-talking serial bachelor, who gives Cal a complete physical and psychological makeover, teaching him how to dress, drink, and confidently pick up women. Hilarious situations ensue leading to a chaotic confrontation around the backyard barbecue.

BLAME THE GAME - GERMANY

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

Relationships with family and friends were often a casualty of the boardgames that were supposed to be a bonding experience. In this German comedy, Pia takes her new young man to meet her friends for the first time at their regular game night, putting him under pressure to make a good impression. But then suddenly, her ex shows up as well. And it’s all downhill from there, ending up in the tiger’s compound at the local zoo. It’s hysterical at what revelations are exposed in the heat of the moment as the game unfolds.
