PROMISED LAND

Why you should watch: There’s a lot going on amongst the vines in this family drama over different periods of time. It is an epic, generation-spanning story about two Latino families vying for wealth and power in California’s Sonoma Valley, focusing on Joe Sandoval, the patriarch and whether or not he was involved in the previous owner’s death. There is quite a lot going on here, but it is an entertaining series.

Director: EDWARD ORNELAS, CLARA ARANOVICH, CHI YOON CHUNG, NICK COPUS, MICHAEL CUESTA, NICK GOMEZ, LILY MARIYE
Cast: JOHN ORTIZ, CECILIA SUAREZ, AUGUSTO AGUILERA, CHRISTINA OCHOA, YUL VAZQUEZ, MARIEL MOLINO, ANDRES VELZ, KATYA MARTIN, ROLANDO CHUSAN, SUSAN ORTIZ

DOPESICK

Why you should watch: The series takes viewers to the epicentre of America’s struggle with opioid addiction, from the boardrooms of Purdue Pharma to a distressed Virginia mining community, to the hallways of the DEA. Although the characters are fictional, their stories are an amalgamation of real people affected by the opioid crisis. The Sackler family are still one of the wealthiest in the US, preferring to stay out of the public eye. Their name has been removed from many charitable organisations throughout the world due to the harm they inflicted on countless people. Disturbing viewing, but interesting, nonetheless.

Director: MICHAEL CUESTA, BARRY LEVINSON, PATRICIA RIGGEN, DANNY STRONG
Cast: MICHAEL KEATON, MICHAEL STUHLBARG, PETER SARSGAARD, WILL POULTER, ROSARIO DAWSON, WILL CHASE, KAITLYN DEVER, MARE WINNINGHAM, JAKE MCDORMAN, ANDREA FRANKLE

THE DROPOUT

Why you should watch: One wonders how powerful, wealthy, supposedly intelligent people can be so gullible as to be taken in by someone who has not really substantiated the claims they make to warrant investment. This TV series chronicles the true story of Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes’ attempt to revolutionise the healthcare industry after dropping out of college and starting a technology company. Holmes was found guilty of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud. She denied all charges and is out on bail awaiting sentencing, which is due to take place in September 2022. Sunny Balwani has also been charged with his trial beginning in June 2022.

Director: MICHAEL SHOWALTER, FRANCESCA GREGORINI, ERICA WATSON
Cast: AMANDA SEYFRIED, NAVEEN ANDREWS, MICHEL GILL, ELIZABETH MARVEL, WILLIAM H. MACY, STEPHEN FRY, KATE BURTON, LAURIE METCALF, SAM WATERSTON, DYLAN MINNETTE, KURTWOOD SMITH

MOON KNIGHT

Why you should watch: If you’re into all things Marvel, then you’ll love this thriller series which follows Steven Grant, a mild- mannered gift-shop employee, who becomes plagued with blackouts and memories of another life. Steven discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with mercenary Marc Spector. As Steven/Marc’s enemies converge upon them, they must navigate their complex identities while thrust into a deadly mystery among the powerful gods of Egypt. It’s marvellous, of course!

Director: MOHAMED DIAB, JUSTIN BENSON, AARON MOORHEAD
Cast: OSCAR ISAAC, ETHAN HAWKE, MAY CALAMAWY, ANN AKINJIRIN, DAVID GANLY, LUCY THACKERAY, ALEXANDER COBB

LIE TO ME

Why you should watch: How handy would it be to have the ability to immediately know when someone was lying to you! In this entertaining series, Tim Roth stars as Dr. Cal Lightman who teaches a course in body language and makes an honest fortune exploiting it. He’s employed by various public authorities in various investigations, doing more when the police etc. fail to go the extra mile. As such he can afford to constitute a team of his own, which like clients and others has to put up with his mind-games. There’s lots of interesting twists and turns in this one.

Director: DANIEL SACKHEIM, MICHAEL ZINBERG, VAHAN MOOSEKIAN, MICHAEL OFFER, ADAM DAVIDSON, JAMES HAYMAN
Cast: TIM ROTH, KELLI WILLIAMS, BRENDAN HINES, MONICA RAYMUND, HAYLEY MCFARLAND, MEKHI PHIFER, MONIQUE GABRIELA CURNEN

OUSSEKINE

Why you should watch: This confronting drama series looks at the terrible true events of December 5, 1986 which led to the death of Malik Oussekine. The events centre on his family’s fight for justice and dives into the heart of the 80s to understand the impact that this drama had on French society at the time. There is no justice for Malik, but is that surprising?

Director: ANTOINE CHEVROLLIER
Cast: HIAM ABBASS, SAYYID EL ALAMI, KAD MERAD, TEWFIK JALLAB, THIERRY GODARD, MOUNA SOUALEM, LAURENT STOCKER

GRAND HOTEL

Why you should watch: There’s a lot going on in this drama series where the story takes a look at the professional and personal lives of people working at a family-run hotel in Miami Beach, where family members are manoeuvring to see who is going to be in line to take over when the patriarch decides to step aside. Added to this is a mysterious waiter (Australian actor Lincoln Younes) who turns up to investigate the disappearance of his sister who also used to work at the hotel. There’s quite a twist at the end of this one and, much to the annoyance of fans, it doesn’t seem that there will be a second series.

Director: BILL D’ELIA, MARISOL ADLER, BARBARA BROWN, DAVID GROSSMAN
Cast: DEMIAN BICHIR, ROSELYN SANCHEZ, DENYSE TONTZ, BRYAN CRAIG, CHRIS WARREN, LINCOLN YOUNES, SHALIM ORTIZ, ANNE WINTERS

GORDON RAMSAY: UNCHARTED

Why you should watch: Love him, or hate him, Gordon is always entertaining. Here he serves up an epic adventure in “Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted.” He travels around the world meeting with indigenous people to learn about their foods and cultures. In each location, he harvests new ingredients and samples new dishes. He also teams up with local legends to cook feasts to present to the native peoples. Fantastic locations in this one.

Director: NEIL DEGROOT, LAURA BALFOUR, ALISTAIR SMITH
Cast: GORDON RAMSAY, SHELDON SIMEON, MONIQUE FISO, VIRGILIO MARTINEZ, MICHELLE COSTELLO, DRACO ROSA

BIG SKY

Why you should watch: This is another interesting series from David E. Kelley. A private detective joins forces with an ex-cop to solve a kidnapping case in Montana. Two sisters are kidnapped by a truck driver on a remote highway, which leads to a web of intrigue embroiling the state police in an investigation which proves to be very disturbing.

Director: GWYNETH HORDER-PAYTON, JEFF T. THOMAS, CHRISTINA ALEXANDRA VOROS, MICHAEL GOI, JENNIFER LYNCH
Cast: KYLIE BUNBURY, KATHERYN WINNICK, BRIAN GERAGHTY, JOHN CARROLL LYNCH, OMAR METWALLY, JESSE JAMES KEITEL, RYAN PHILLIPE, NATALIE ALYN LIND, JADE PETTYJOHN

OBI-WAN KENOBI

Why you should watch: There’s great excitement in the Star Wars universe this month as Obi-Wan Kenobi gets his own series. The story begins 10 years after the dramatic events of “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” where Obi-Wan Kenobi faced his greatest defeat – the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, who turned to the dark side as evil Sith Lord Darth Vader.

Director: DEBORAH CHOW
Cast: EWAN MCGREGOR, MOSES INGRAM, RUPERT FRIEND, JOEL EDGERTON, HAYDEN CHRISTENSEN, SUNG KANG, FLEA
