THE BEAR

Why you should watch: Apparently, if you’re a chef or a cook in the US you’re much sought after on the dating circuit and it’s all down to this much-lauded comedy series about running a restaurant. The critics call it the year’s best TV show! That’s a big call. Shameless actor Jeremy Allen White stars as Carmen Berzatto, a brilliant young chef from the fine-dining world who is forced to return home to run his family sandwich shop – the Original Beef of Chicagoland – after a death in his family. A world away from what he’s used to, Carmy must balance the soul-crushing reality of trading in Michelin star restaurants for the small business’ kitchen filled with strong-willed and recalcitrant staff and his strained familial relationships. This one is a hit.

Director: CHRISTOPHER STORER, JOANNA CALO
Cast: JEREMY ALLEN WHITE, EBON MOSS-BACHRACH, AYO EDEBIRI, LIONEL BOYCE, ABBY ELLIOTT, OLIVER PLATT, JON BERNTHAL

SHE-HULK: ATTORNEY AT LAW

Why you should watch: If you are a fan of all things Marvel, and Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, then this one is for you. Here we have Bruce Banner’s cousin Jennifer Walters navigating the complicated life of a single, 30-something attorney. But this all changes when she accidentally comes into contact with Bruce’s blood. Suddenly Jennifer is now a green 6-foot-7-inch superpowered Hulk. Even Bruce has met his match! This may have been made for a certain audience, but it’s still lots of fun.

Director: KAT COIRO, ANU VALIA
Cast: TATIANA MASLANY, MARK RUFFALO, GINGER GONZAGA, TIM ROTH, BENEDICT WONG, CHARLIE FOX, STEVE COULTER

CODE BLACK

Why you should watch: One becomes exhausted just watching the action in this emergency centre. This series is based on the documentary Code Black by Dr. Ryan McGarry. It shows the historic LA County General Hospital built in 1928, one of the world’s busiest hospitals. It’s medical drama all the way as we follow the staff in an extremely busy emergency room as they cope with a staggering number of patients, which oftentimes outweighs the hospital’s resources, resulting in a code black. There is a talented ensemble cast attached to this one.

Director: DAVID VON ANCKEN, CONSTANTINE MAKRIS, ROB BOWMAN, LEE ROSE, OZ SCOTT, ALEX ZAKRZEWSKI, ROB BAILEY
Cast: MARCIA GAY HARDEN, BEN HOLLINGSWORTH, ROB LOWE, BONNI SOMERVILLE, LUIS GUZMAN, RAZA JAFFREY, HARRY FORD

CANDY

Why you should watch: This is a strange one, but it does hold the attention. The drama takes place in Texas in 1980 and is based on the true story of killer Candy Montgomery and her victim, Betty Gore. Jessica Biel plays Montgomery, who seemingly had it all – a loving husband with a good job, a daughter and a son, a nice house in the suburbs – so why did she kill her friend from church with an axe? Yes, it all very mystifying and so is the outcome.

Director: MICHAEL UPPENDAHL, JENNIFER GETZINGER, BENJAMIN SEMANOFF
Cast: JESSICA BIEL, MELANIE LYNSKEY, PABLO SCHREIBER, TIMOTHY SIMONS, JASON RITTER, JESSIE MUELLER, COLEY CAMPANY

UNDER THE BANNER OF HEAVEN

Why you should watch: Ever wonder what God would think of the actions done in his name?! I’m sure he/she would be pretty puzzled by what happens in this drama based on the book by Jon Krakuaer documenting the murder of Brenda Lafferty in the 1980s. Andrew Garfield was nominated for an Emmy for his role as a devout detective whose faith is tested as he investigates a brutal murder seemingly connected to an esteemed Utah family’s spiral into LDS fundamentalism and their distrust in the government. This is definitely a case of putting one’s own interpretation on the scriptures, taken to the extreme.

Director: COURTNEY HUNT, DAVID MACKENZIE, DUSTIN LANCE BLACK
Cast: ANDREW GARFIELD, GIL BIRMINGHAM, SAM WORTHINGTON, RORY CULKIN, DAISY EDGAR-JONES, BILLY HOWLE, WYATT RUSSELL

PISTOL

Why you should watch: There will be great debate over this drama series, and one would expect nothing less due to the dedication of Sex Pistols fans. The fact that it’s on Disney is quite amazing as am sure Walt wouldn’t have thought much of them at all. Yes, it does have its faults, but if you love the music from that era, you will love this. This viewer certainly did. Nothing was the same after The Pistols. Directed by the talented Danny Boyle, the series is based on the memoir of Steve Jones, the legendary Sex Pistols guitarist who helped usher in a punk revolution in Britain, and that’s good enough for this viewer.

Director: DANNY BOYLE
Cast: TOBY WALLACE, ANSON BOON, JACOB SLATER, LOUIS PARTRIDGE, THOMAS BRODIE-SANGSTER, SYDNEY CHANDLER, TALULAH RILEY

WELCOME TO WREXHAM

Why you should watch: Liverpool legend Bill Shankly is reported to have said “Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.” And it appears to be in this case when Hollywood actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds purchase Wrexham AFC, one of the UK’s oldest football clubs. Welcome to Wrexham chronicles the takeover and follow the Red Dragons’ fortunes over the following two seasons. A great documentary about the “world game.”

Cast: RYAN REYNOLDS, ROB MCELHENNEY

THE OLD MAN

Why you should watch: This viewer loves Jeff Bridges in everything he does. In this espionage drama he stars as Dan Chase, a former CIA officer who’s living off the grid, but finds himself on the run from people who want to kill him. It all harks back to his past supported 1980’s Afghan warlord Faraz Hamzad against the Russians with the help of his supervisor, Harold Harper, but of course there’s a lot more to it than that. John Lithgow stars as Harper, and he and Bridges are excellent as two men whose past is connected more than they realise. Great viewing.

Director: JOHN WATTS, JET WILKINSON, GREG YAITANES, ZETNA FUENTES
Cast: JEFF BRIDGES, JOHN LITHGOW, BILL HECK, AMY BRENNEMAN, HIAM ABBASS, JOEL GREY, ROWENA KING, E.J. BONILLA, ALIA SHAWKAT

THIS FOOL

Why you should watch: After all the serious stuff we delve into a bit of comedy from South Central. Loved this one, especially Michael Imperioli showing his comedic side as the Minister in charge of the neighbourhood centre. The series centres on Julio Lopez, a punk-ass bitch with a heart of gold who goes out of his way to help everyone but himself. Inspired by the life and stand-up comedy of star, co-creator and real-life punk ass bitch Estrada, the comedy explores Julio’s attempts to better his community, overcome his co-dependency issues with his family and navigate working class life in South Central.

Director: PAT BISHOP, MATT INGEBRETSON, DIEGO VELASCO
Cast: CHRIS ESTRADA, MICHELLE ORTIZ, FRANKIE QUINONES, LAURA PATALANO, MICHAEL IMPERIOLI, JULIA VERA, ANNA LAMADRID
