WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

This crime drama series explores what London thieves Gal and Don were up to prior to the 2000 movie with Ray Winstone and Ben Kingsley. With their reputation growing across London, Gal and Don are recruited by renowned criminal boss Teddy Bass – an extremely sinister and decadent turn by Stephen Moyer – for a high-stakes job. But as they continue to rise in the criminal world, they find their lives changed forever. Reviews were not kind, but I enjoyed this series and watched it all in one go. The conclusion was a bit up in the air and apparently it has not as yet been renewed for a second season, which is very annoying for those who actually liked it and invested 8 hours of precious time to view it.

CAST

JAMES MCARDLE, EMUN MOHAMMADI, SARAH GREEN, ELIZA BENNETT, TAMSIN GREIG, STEPHEN MOYER, PAUL KAYE.

DEXTER: NEW BLOOD

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

Back in 2006 during my stint at a cable movie channel, everyone was watching and raving about Dexter. It was ground-breaking TV back then. I must confess I didn’t watch all of the eight seasons, due to time allocated to other series like Breaking Bad, which was preferable for me. In this new series, several years after escaping from his former life in Miami, Dexter Morgan is living in a small, isolated town in upstate New York. He is now Jim Lindsay, has a stable job, is on friendly terms with everyone in town and his girlfriend is the town sheriff. His life gets complicated when his son Harrison tracks him down and is reunited with him. I guess after watching hours and hours of crime drama, one becomes aware of the twists and turns in scripts and where they are leading, which is what occurred for me with this one. But true Dexter aficionados may disagree.

FIRE COUNTRY

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

This drama series was inspired by creator Max Thieriot’s own experiences growing up in Northern California. The story follows Bode Donovan, a male prisoner who joins a firefighting unit to try to shorten his prison sentence, which happens to be in his hometown, where he is not thought highly of due to past actions which affected a number of his family and friends. As his unit is trying to prevent bushfires, he tries to adapt to a new lifestyle and does everything that he possibly can to reconnect with those close to him. This one is part family drama, part romance, comedy, past tensions etc. It’s got the lot, with a fire thrown in every now and then. It’s not amazing, but it is worth a look. Love the opening track Joker and the Thief by Australia’s Wolfmother.

MAYOR OF KINGSTOWN

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

Jeremy Renner has always been a favourite. I often go back and rewatch series that have made an impression, and this is one of them. There are two seasons to binge on Paramount. The story revolves around the McLusky family who have been keeping the peace in Kingstown for decades, acting as the mediators between the street gangs, prisoners, guards, and cops. This is a prison town and tackling themes of systemic racism, corruption, and inequality, is part of its fabric. Renner, as Mike McLusky, and Aidan Gillen as Milo Sunter are the standout performances in this one, for me. In Season 2, the police are out of control and the prison is a mess. Mike is the only one who can set up a system that will prevent riots from recurring. Be warned that the violence is out of control!

JEREMY RENNER, HUGH DILLON, TAYLOR HANDLEY, AIDAN GILLEN, DIANNE WIEST, LANE GARRISON, NICHOLE GALICIA

BROTHERHOOD

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

This is another excellent series I decided to rewatch. There are three seasons available.  The series was inspired by real-life Irish American brothers from the Irish neighbourhood of South Boston: James ‘Whitey’ Bulger, Jr., a gangster who has been on the F.B.I.’s Most Wanted List for 10 years as a fugitive from justice, and William Bulger. The series is set in an Irish neighbourhood in Providence, Rhode Island, and revolves around two brothers on opposite sides of the law: one a gangster, Michael Caffee, and the other a state politician, Tommy Caffee. This is an excellent series that did not get a lot of recognition at the time. There is a talented ensemble cast attached. Once again, violence is prevalent.

JASON ISAACS, JASON CLARKE, ANNABETH GISH, KEVIN CHAPMAN, FIONNULA FLANAGAN, ETHAN EMBY, FIONA C. ERICKSON

THE CURSE

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

After all the drama of the above series, we move on to what’s available in comedy. Whitney and Asher Siegel are a newlywed couple struggling to bring their vision for eco-conscious housing to the small community of Española, New Mexico. But their efforts are complicated when an eccentrically flawed reality TV producer, Dougie, sees opportunity in their story. As the series unfolds, the couple find themselves caught in a mysterious web of ethical and moral grey zones – all while trying to keep their relationship afloat. I know Nathan Fielder, who stars as Asher, is very popular, but I must say I did find him very annoying here and couldn’t fathom why Whitney was with him at all. Still, it did hold my attention and had its amusing moments.

SO HELP ME TODD

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

This comedy series I found very amusing and enjoyable. Marcia Gay Harden as the mother, Margaret, and Skylar Astin as her son, Todd, are both likeable characters. Meticulous attorney Margaret Wright hires her talented but scruffy son Todd as her law firm’s in-house investigator. As the black sheep of the well-heeled Wright family, Todd is a laid-back, quick-thinking, excellent former private detective who fell on hard times. Margaret’s penchant for excellence and strict adherence to the law is at complete odds with Todd’s scrappy methods of finding his way. But when Todd teams with his mother on a case, she’s surprised to find herself duly impressed by his crafty ability to sleuth out information. It is about Harden and Astin here. They are both excellent.

MARCIA GAY HARDEN, SKYLAR ASTIN, MADELINE WISE, TRISTEN J. WINGER, INGA SCHLINGMANN, ROSA ARRENDONDO, MARK MOSES

CORPORATE

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

If you’ve ever been employed in the corporate sector, people and situations will resonate in this amusing comedy series. From Pat Bishop, Matt Ingebretson, and Jake Weisman comes a dark, edgy look at life as a Junior-Executive-in-Training at your average, soulless multi-national corporation. Matt and Jake are at the mercy of a tyrannical CEO Christian DeVille – Lance Reddick is in great form in this role – and his top lieutenants, sycophants John and Kate. As Matt and Jake navigate an ever-revolving series of disasters their only ally is Hampton Deville Human Resources rep Grace. This one is hilarious. There are three seasons available.

GHOSTS (USA)

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

Having really enjoyed the UK version of this comedy series, I was reluctant to view a remake. However, I decided to cast doubts aside and delve in. And I’m glad I did. This is so funny. Even my son, who happened to be visiting, was laughing out loud, and he’s not easily amused! Cheerful freelance journalist Samantha and Jay, an up-and-coming chef from the city, throw both caution and money to the wind when they decide to convert a huge run-down country estate they inherited into a bed-and-breakfast – until they discover that it is inhabited by the spirits of many deceased former residents. And so, the fun begins. What a treat! Thorfinn the Viking would have to be my personal favourite. There are three seasons to binge for this one.

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

This is another series I only ever watched one or two seasons of, which I did find to be great viewing as am an admirer of Patricia Arquette. There are seven seasons to binge watch. Arquette stars as housewife and mother Allison DuBois who uses her psychic visions about dead people and the violence surrounding them to work as a part-time consultant with the local district attorney’s office. Her husband, Joe, a science engineer, goes from being a sceptic to a bemused believer as Allison’s gifts help solve crimes across the country. This is a solid crime drama with an excellent ensemble cast attached.
