Started acting in high school when a literary teacher made him read poetry in front of a class; soon a friend asked him to appear in some short films he was making. Known for his balding pate; was bald by age 26. Big break came in 1998 when he landed the role of Andrés on Spanish TV's Mareas Vivas.
Best known to U.S. audiences as drug kingpin Montoya in the 2006 film version of Miami Vice. Has been a part of several bands, including Magical Brothers, The Ellas, and Di Elas; Di Elas released its first album in 2011. Ventured into directing in 2013 with the documentary Cambia de Papel.
