Having interest in acting since childhood, often participated in school plays and debates. Studied creative writing while in college. Worked as a copywriter for advertising giants J.
Walter Thompson and Ogilvy & Mather after finishing his studies. Worked as an assistant director on his return to India, where his primary job consisted of taking care of the crowd. Made his debut with the movie Band Baaja Baaraat (2010).
The role won him a Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. Rapped for the title track of his movie Ladies vs Ricky Bahl (2011). First A-list Indian actor to have endorsed a condom.
Appeared in the Durex ad in 2014; claims to have written the script for the ad himself. Appeared in Jack and Jones first video campaign for India "Don't Hold Back." He penned and sang the rap song used in the video. Won his first Filmfare Best Actor Award for his film Bajirao Mastani (2015); was named best actor at many other award functions for the same film.
