Started earning at the age of 15. His father changed their surname to Warsi after he came across a holy person. Won Indian Dance competition in 1991 and started his dance academy Awesome from the prize money. Finished 4th at the 1992 World Dance Championship in London, in the Modern Jazz category. Met his wife, Maria Goretti, when she auditioned for his dance troupe. Started his career as a choreographer for the title song of the film Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja (1993). Made his screen debut in Tere Mere Sapne (1996), which was produced by Amitabh Bachchan's production company. Won the Filmfare Best Comedian Award for Lago Raho Munna Bhai (2006). Chain smoker for 30 years, but gave up smoking on 1st October 2013, after his son gave a card asking him to quit smoking.

Is the son of famous Gurjarati actress Leela Jariwala, and has said he felt he had a lot of expectations to live up to as an actor. Has been married to Indian television personality Apara Mehta since 1980, and although they have been separated for some time, they are not officially divorced and still remain the best of friends. Came to acting quite late in life, and made his television debut in 1997 on the eve of turning 40. Has acted both on the screen and on the stage, including in the English play Salt & Pepper, which his own production company, Leela Theatres, produced. Has said in the past that his most challenging and demanding role as an actor was playing Mohandas Gandhi in the 2007 film Ghandi My Father.
