Stewart Granger (Actor) .. Richard Darrell
Born: May 06, 1913
Died: August 16, 1993
Trivia: British actor Stewart Granger, born James Stewart, studied acting at the Webber-Douglas School of Dramatic Art and began getting work as an extra in British films in 1933. In the late '30s he adopted his professional name to avoid confusion with recent star James Stewart. He worked with various stage companies before getting his first lead role onscreen in So This Is London (1939). In the '40s Granger was one of British films' two top romantic leading men (along with James Mason) and a steady box-office draw, attracting the interest of Hollywood. He signed with MGM in 1950, and for the next seven years played a variety of virile "he-man" types such as romantic swashbucklers and white hunters. After becoming a U.S. citizen in 1956, Granger began free-lancing, appearing again in British films as well as in international productions in the following decade. He began accepting starring roles on TV in the early '70s. From 1950-60 Stewart Granger was married to actress Jean Simmons, the second of his three wives.
Jean Kent (Actor) .. Rosal
Born: June 21, 1921
Died: November 30, 2013
Trivia: A performer from age 11, Jean Kent was billed as Jean Carr when she danced in the chorus of London's Windmill Theater, a popular quasi-burlesque establishment. Kent made her first film appearance in 1935, hitting her stride in the mid-1940s. She joyously harked back to her music hall roots in the leading role of the 1945 movie musical Trottie True. A busy television performer, Jean Kent has been a regular on such British series as Sir Francis Drake (1962, as Queen Elizabeth), Tycoon (1978), Crossroads (1981), Lovejoy (1990) and Shrinks (1991). Kent died in 2013 at age 92 after falling at her home.
Anne Crawford (Actor) .. Oriana Camperdene
Born: January 01, 1920
Died: January 01, 1956
Dennis Price (Actor) .. Sir Francis Castleton
Born: June 23, 1915
Died: October 07, 1973
Trivia: "I am not a star and never was. I lack that essential spark." There are precious few filmgoers who would agree with British actor Dennis Price's doleful self-assessment. The son of a military man, the Oxford-educated Price embarked upon an acting career in 1937. After several seasons in John Gielgud's acting company, Price began making films in 1944. He was often cast as handsome scoundrels, notably the charmingly homicidal heir in 1949's Kind Hearts and Coronets. A busy character actor into the 1970s, Price gained a whole new flock of fans for his appearances as Jeeves in the BBC TVer The World of Wooster. He was last seen onscreen as one of Vincent Price's victims in Theatre of Blood (1973).
Robert Helpmann (Actor) .. Wycroft
Born: April 09, 1909
Died: September 28, 1986
Trivia: At age 11 he began appearing in the Australian ballet, and later appeared in stage musicals and toured with Pavlova's dance company. In 1933 he moved to England and joined the Sadler's Wells Ballet; soon he became that company's principal dancer, and in the '40s he choreographed many of its productions. He devoted most of the '50s to acting, appearing with the Old Vic in productions of Shakespeare, then returned to ballet in the '60s; in 1965 he was appointed co-director of the Australian Ballet company. Beginning in the early '40s, he appeared sporadically in films; some of his work involved dancing -- such as The Red Shoes (1948), which he also choreographed -- and some involved straight dramatic roles. He co-directed (with Rudolf Nureyev) and played the title role in the ballet-film Don Quixote (1973). He was knighted in 1950.
Gerard Heinz (Actor) .. Don Carlos
Born: January 01, 1902
Died: January 01, 1972
Arthur Goullet (Actor) .. Suiza
John Salew (Actor) .. Diego
Born: January 01, 1897
Trivia: British stage actor John Salew made the transition to films in 1939. The manpower shortage during WWII enabled the stout, balding Salew to play larger and more important roles than would have been his lot in other circumstances. He usually played suspicious-looking characters, often Germanic in origin. His screen assignments include such parts as William Shakespeare (yes, that William Shakespeare) in the comedy-fantasy Time Flies (1944), Grimstone in the Gothic meller Uncle Silas (1947), and the librarian in the psychological thriller Night of the Demon (1957). John Salew was active into the TV era, playing the sort of parts that John McGiver essayed in the U.S.
Julian Somers (Actor) .. Manoel
Born: January 01, 1903
Died: January 01, 1976
Peter Murray (Actor) .. Juan
Born: September 19, 1925
Merle Tottenham (Actor) .. Tweeny
Born: January 22, 1901
David Horne (Actor) .. Camperdene
Born: July 14, 1898
Died: March 15, 1970
Trivia: Well-padded British actor/playwright David Horne entered films in 1935, making his mark in pompous, self-satisfied characterizations. Seldom seen in large roles, he was indispensable in such utility parts as desk clerks, newspaper editors, police officials, lawyers, and doctors. Lutheran filmgoers will recall Horne as Duke Frederick in the church basement perennial Martin Luther (1953). David Horne remained active until 1968.
Sylvie St. Clair (Actor) .. Marie
Patricia Laffan (Actor) .. Betty
Born: March 19, 1919
Trivia: Patricia Laffan is an English actress of stage, film, and television. Her big-screen career, which lasted from 1945 through 1965, generally took the form of small (sometimes uncredited) parts in bigger movies (The Rake's Progress, I See a Dark Stranger) and bigger roles in low-budget movies (Old Mother Riley at Home). Her two most widely seen parts came early on, as Poppaea, the decadent wife of Peter Ustinov's Nero -- with designs on Robert Taylor's Marcus Venicius -- in Quo Vadis? (1951); and as the fierce, leather-clad alien invader Nyah in the low-budget science fiction feature Devil Girl from Mars (1954), where her imperious manner, coupled with her costume, turned her into a memorably campy figure among bad-movie enthusiasts and leather fetishists for generations to come. Oddly enough, some critics who have seen Devil Girl from Mars have had relatively kind things to say about Laffan's work in the role of Nyah. As written, the part is utterly incomprehensible, much as the movie is ineptly directed; but she, like the other cast of professionals (including Joseph Tomelty and Adrienne Corri), does give it her best shot. Her height and gaunt, intense features made her difficult to cast in much other than bit or character roles on-screen, and Laffan's movie work gave way to television as the decade wore on. By the 1960s, she was mostly visible on the small screen.
