Trivia: In the first ten years of his life, Raymond Burr moved from town to town with his mother, a single parent who supported her little family by playing the organ in movie houses and churches. An unusually large child, he was able to land odd jobs that would normally go to adults. He worked as a ranch hand, a traveling tinted-photograph salesman, a Forest service fire guard, and a property agent in China, where his mother had briefly resettled. At 19, he made the acquaintance of film director Anatole Litvak, who arranged for Burr to get a job at a Toronto summer-stock theater. This led to a stint with a touring English rep company; one of his co-workers, Annette Sutherland, became his first wife. After a brief stint as a nightclub singer in Paris, Burr studied at the Pasadena Playhouse and took adult education courses at Stanford, Columbia, and the University of Chunking. His first New York theatrical break was in the 1943 play Duke in Darkness. That same year, his wife Sutherland was killed in the same plane crash that took the life of actor Leslie Howard. Distraught after the death of his wife, Burr joined the Navy, served two years, then returned to America in the company of his four-year-old son, Michael Evan Burr (Michael would die of leukemia in 1953). Told by Hollywood agents that he was overweight for movies, the 340-pound Burr spent a torturous six months living on 750 calories per day. Emerging at a trim 210 pounds, he landed his first film role, an unbilled bit as Claudette Colbert's dancing partner in Without Reservations (1946). It was in San Quentin (1946), his next film, that Burr found his true metier, as a brooding villain. He spent the next ten years specializing in heavies, menacing everyone from the Marx Brothers (1949's Love Happy) to Clark Gable (1950's Key to the City) to Montgomery Clift (1951's A Place in the Sun) to Natalie Wood (1954's A Cry in the Night). His most celebrated assignments during this period included the role of melancholy wife murderer Lars Thorwald in Hitchcock's Rear Window (1954) and reporter Steve Martin in the English-language scenes of the Japanese monster rally Godzilla (1956), a characterization he'd repeat three decades later in Godzilla 1985. While he worked steadily on radio and television, Burr seemed a poor prospect for series stardom, especially after being rejected for the role of Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke on the grounds that his voice was too big. In 1957, he was tested for the role of district attorney Hamilton Burger in the upcoming TV series Perry Mason. Tired of playing unpleasant secondary roles, Burr agreed to read for Burger only if he was also given a shot at the leading character. Producer Gail Patrick Jackson, who'd been courting such big names as William Holden, Fred MacMurray, and Efrem Zimbalist Jr., agreed to humor Burr by permitting him to test for both Burger and Perry Mason. Upon viewing Burr's test for the latter role, Perry Mason creator Erle Stanley Gardner jumped up, pointed at the screen, and cried "That's him!" Burr was cast as Mason on the spot, remaining with the role until the series' cancellation in 1966 and winning three Emmies along the way. Though famous for his intense powers of concentration during working hours -- he didn't simply play Perry Mason, he immersed himself in the role -- Burr nonetheless found time to indulge in endless on-set practical jokes, many of these directed at his co-star and beloved friend, actress Barbara Hale. Less than a year after Mason's demise, Burr was back at work as the wheelchair-bound protagonist of the weekly detective series Ironside, which ran from 1967 to 1975. His later projects included the short-lived TVer Kingston Confidential (1976), a sparkling cameo in Airplane 2: The Sequel (1982), and 26 two-hour Perry Mason specials, lensed between 1986 and 1993. Burr was one of the most liked and highly respected men in Hollywood. Fiercely devoted to his friends and co-workers, Burr would threaten to walk off the set whenever one of his associates was treated in a less than chivalrous manner by the producers or the network. Burr also devoted innumerable hours to charitable and humanitarian works, including his personally financed one-man tours of Korean and Vietnamese army bases, his support of two dozen foster children, and his generous financial contributions to the population of the 4,000-acre Fiji island of Naitauba, which he partly owned. Despite his unbounded generosity and genuine love of people, Burr was an intensely private person. After his divorce from his second wife and the death from cancer of his third, Burr remained a bachelor from 1955 until his death. Stricken by kidney cancer late in 1992, he insisted upon maintaining his usual hectic pace, filming one last Mason TV movie and taking an extended trip to Europe. In his last weeks, Burr refused to see anyone but his closest friends, throwing "farewell" parties to keep their spirits up. Forty-eight hours after telling his longtime friend and business partner Robert Benevides, "If I lie down, I'll die," 76-year-old Raymond Burr did just that -- dying as he'd lived, on his own terms.

Trivia: After making his film debut in Naked City (1948), Raymond Greenleaf was nearly always cast as a judge, most memorably as conscience-stricken, suicide-prone Judge Stanton in the 1949 Oscar-winner All the King's Men. Usually a supporting player, he was afforded top billing as a dedicated county prosecutor in Republic's When Gangland Strikes (1956). Raymond Greenleaf once more donned judicial robes for his final screen appearance in Judgement at Nuremberg (1961).
Brian G. Hutton (Actor) .. Rod Gleason

Trivia: Born and trained in New York City, Brian G. Hutton spent several frustrating years as a movie and TV bit player and as a stand-in for more famous screen personalities. With the help of an industry friend, writer/director Douglas M. Heyes, Hutton began securing TV-series directing assignments in the early 1960s. His first theatrical feature as a director was Wild Seed (1965), an outgrowth of Universal's "young talent" department. Hutton directed the outsized action films Where Eagles Dare (1969) and Kelly's Heroes (1970), and two Elizabeth Taylor vehicles, X, Y and Zee (1971) and Night Watch (1975). His last directing effort was High Road to China in 1983; Hutton died in 2014.
William Schallert (Actor) .. Graves

Trivia: The son of the Los Angeles Times' drama editor, William Schallert was, along with Sydney Chaplin, one of the co-founders of Hollywood's highly regarded Circle Theatre troupe. Sent to Great Britain on a Fulbright Fellowship to study British repertory theatre, Schallert guest-lectured at Oxford on several occasion before heading home. A character actor of almost intimidating versatility, Schallert began his long film and TV career in 1951. While he appeared in films of every variety, Schallert was most closely associated with the many doctors (mad or otherwise), lab technicians and scientific experts that he played in such science fiction endeavors as The Man From Planet X (1951), Gog (1954), Them! (1954) The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957) and The Monolith Monsters (1959). Director Joe Dante paid homage to Schallert's prolific horror-flick work by casting the actor in his Matinee, where he played yet another dabbler in Things Man Is Not Meant to Know in the film-within-a-film "Mant." Schallert's hundreds television credits could fill a book in themselves; the Nickelodeon cable network once tried to put together a montage of the actor's guest star appearances, touching only the tip of the iceberg. He was a regular on such series as Dobie Gillis (as literature teacher Mr. Pomfrit, who always dismissed his class as though announcing the beginning of the Indy 500), Get Smart (as a senile 97-year-old Navy admiral), The Nancy Drew Mysteries (as Nancy's attorney father) The New Gidget (as Gidget's professor father) The Nancy Walker Show, Little Women and Santa Barbara. His most famous TV role was as Patty Lane's ever-patient newspaper-editor dad on The Patty Duke Show, which ran from 1963 through 1966; over twenty years later, Mr. Schallert and Ms. Duke were touchingly reunited--again as father and daughter--on an episode of The Torkelsons (1991-92). William Schallert once served as president of the Screen Actors' Guild, a position later held...by Patty Duke. Shallert continued acting until the early 2010s; he died in 2016, at age 93.

Trivia: Over her long career, Lillian Bronson played numerous small character roles in a wide variety of films. The New York City native made her screen debut in The Happy Land (1943) starring Don Ameche. After many film appearances, she branched out into television, working as a regular on shows like Kings Row, where she played Grandma from 1955 to 1956, and Date With the Angels between 1957 and 1958. Bronson also guest starred on numerous television shows, especially Westerns like The Rifleman, Have Gun Will Travel, and The Guns of Will Sonnett.

Trivia: Stoutly proportioned yet dignified character actor Howard Wendell was known for his skill and reliability in a screen career lasting three decades -- according to his grandson, he was referred to by those who knew his work as "one-take Wendell." Born Howard David Wendell in Johnstown, Pennsylvania in 1908, though he considered Elyria, Ohio, where he was raised, to be his home. His acting career began with work in a minstrel show, and he later appeared on a radio show broadcast out of Cleveland, Ohio. Wendell worked with the Elyria Playmakers, and was later an apprentice at the Cleveland Playhouse. Later, while traveling across the midwest as an actor, he also began directing plays and acting in summer stock, and subsequently moved on to road show productions in the northeast. By the end of the 1940s, he'd amassed some Broadway credits as well, and made his small-screen debut on Colgate Theatre. By 1952, he was in Hollywood and working in feature films, most notably Fritz Lang's The Big Heat (1953). Wendell proved adept at older character parts, including politicians, doctors, business executives, judges, and other authority figures -- in Lang's film, he was memorable as an incompetent and crooked police chief, who is seen harassing the honest members of his force and kowtowing to his city's worst gang elements. Perhaps Wendell's strangest appearance was in Edward L. Cahn's The Fourt Skulls of Jonathan Drake (1958), in which he portrayed a medical doctor whose skill at saving lives gets him killed -- his character appears, decidedly postmortem, in the guise of a severed head in the vault of the villain. Wendell could also do comedy, and appeared in his share of sitcoms, including The Dick Van Dyke Show. Although he officially retired in 1963, Wendell went on to do appearances in episodes of I Dream of Jeannie Batman in the later 1960s, and he gave his final screen performance on an episode of Adam-12 in 1971.
Christian Nyby (Actor)

Trivia: An editor-turned-director, Los Angeles-born Christian Nyby has led a fascinating career, albeit one better represented in the editing room than from the director's chair. He began work in the movie business as an editor at Warner Bros. during World War II (with Destination Tokyo, Hollywood Canteen, and To Have and Have Not), and, with the latter film, became part of Howard Hawks' crew, and worked on The Big Sleep (1944), undoubtedly taking part in the recutting of that movie after its initial showings to servicemen were received with complaints that its didn't contain enough scenes of stars Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall together. He also worked on other filmmakers' pictures, including Raoul Walsh's complex western/noir classic Pursued (1946). Nyby was sometimes put into an awkward position -- as editors can be -- by virtue of the complications surrounding Hawks' movies, most notably on Red River (1948) -- director/producer Hawks, having finished the sprawling western film late, was obligated to leave for Europe for his next picture, and had to shorten the film, which had tested poorly for length in previews. Then Howard Hughes threatened to sue for alleged plagiarism, claiming that some plot elements of Red River's ending had been lifted from Hughes's 1943 production of The Outlaw (which Hawks had worked on briefly). Hawks was forced to leave Nyby with Hughes to settle their differences regarding Red River, and the resulting movie -- cut to Hughes' demands to meet an impending release date -- was a far lesser movie than the version originally previewed. Still, the movie got out, and became regarded as a classic -- fortunately, the version originally assembled by Hawks and Nyby survived, and was released, initially by mistake and later by design, to an appreciative public during the '60s, and restored to 35mm in the '80s. Nyby's involvement with Hawks' production of The Thing (1951) has always been controversial as well -- he is credited as director, Hawks as producer, but the style of the film is so thoroughly Hawks' own, that most people have rightly assumed that the director/producer was either sitting in the director's chair or looking directly over his protege's shoulder, and Hawks himself admitted to giving Nyby director's credit on the picture in order to get his protege his Directors Guild membership. Certainly none of Nyby's subsequent movies, including Hell on Devil's Island (1957), Young Fury, Operation CIA (1965), or First to Fight (1967), showed anything resembling the stylistic flair or tautness of The Thing.
Frank Wilcox (Actor) .. Judge Markham

Trivia: American actor Frank Wilcox had intended to follow his father's footsteps in the medical profession, but financial and personal circumstances dictated a redirection of goals. He joined the Resident Theater in Kansas City in the late '20s, spending several seasons in leading man roles. In 1934, Wilcox visited his father in California, and there he became involved with further stage work, first with his own acting troupe and then with the Pasadena Playhouse. Shortly afterward, Wilcox was signed to a contract at Warner Bros., where he spent the next few years in a wide range of character parts, often cast as crooked bankers, shifty attorneys, and that old standy, the Fellow Who Doesn't Get the Girl. Historian Leslie Haliwell has suggested that Wilcox often played multiple roles in these Warners films, though existing records don't bear this out. Frank Wilcox was still working into the 1960s; his most popular latter-day role was as Mr. Brewster, the charming banker who woos and wins Cousin Pearl Bodine (Bea Benaderet) during the inaugural 1962-1963 season of TV's The Beverly Hillbillies.
Connie Cezon (Actor) .. Gertie Lade
Trivia: Connie Cezon's main claim to fame is as a comic actress, and a romantic and slapstick foil for the Three Stooges; but it was her resemblance to Bette Davis that earned her a place (albeit uncredited) in the feature film Dead Ringer, and a mention in the actress' autobiography. Connie Cezon (whose name was often spelled "Cezan" in credits) is probably best remembered by fans of the Three Stooges for the five screen appearances she made with the trio, beginning with Corny Casanovas in 1952. Cezon proved in her onscreen run-ins with the Stooges that she could give as good as she could get, leading them to comedic ruin with her romantic wiles in the movie. In Tricky Dicks (1953), the trio's parody of Detective Story, she played a slick pickpocket, and in Hot Stuff (1956), Cezon dished out mayhem to an annoyingly flirtatious Moe Howard; and she was on the receiving end of the slapstick humor for Rusty Romeos (1957), a remake of Corny Casanovas. Born Consuelo Cezon, she trained in musical comedy and melodrama at the Pasadena Playhouse, appeared for four years in blackouts for Ken Murray, and worked in legitimate theater in Hollywood and New York. Her comedic skills brought her to the attention of playwright Moss Hart, who used her in a handful of his productions. She did variety television with Murray, and also did straight acting roles -- with some understated comedy -- in the recurring role of receptionist Gertie Lade on the classic late-'50s series Perry Mason, starring Raymond Burr. Cezon's feature-film performances have been few in number -- apart from a small role in the Jerry Lewis feature The Errand Boy (1962), her most notable big-screen appearances were as a waitress in Bruno Ve Sota's low-budget film noir The Female Jungle (1956), and serving as Bette Davis' seen-from-the-back double in Dead Ringer (1964). Her resemblance to the star was essential in making the movie -- in which Davis played identical twins -- and so impressed Davis that she later remarked that the director could have used Cezon in place of her in certain shots.
Russell Garcia (Actor)

Trivia: Russell Garcia started out in music as a child prodigy, teaching himself the cornet, as well as how to read music, while still a young boy. He later received formal training with figures such as Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, and got his first formal job in music through the radio, taking a conductor's spot on a popular program. Best known since the 1950s as a conductor, composer, arranger, and trumpeter, he has worked with figures such as Roy Eldridge, Stan Kenton, et al. He also spent more than a decade at Universal Pictures as an arranger and composer in their music department. He had two early low-budget composing credits at the outset of the 1950s, but it wasn't until the early '60s that Garcia got to show his real abilities in this area, on a proper cinematic canvas, with the scores for a pair of George Pal-produced fantasy films, The Time Machine and Atlantis, the Lost Continent. Those soundtracks might well have established him as an important name in the scoring of such genre movies, but he was never able to follow them up, and apart from two subsequent scoring credits (one of them a Western) in the middle of the 1960s, Garcia's major film composing career was limited to that pair of George Pal productions.
Paul Bryar (Actor) .. Sgt. Wilbur

Trivia: In films from 1938's Tenth Avenue Kid, American actor Paul Bryar remained a durable character player for over thirty years, usually in police uniform. Among his screen credits were Follow Me Quietly (1949), Dangerous When Wet (1952), Inside Detroit (1955) and The Killer is Loose (1956). He also showed up in one serial, Republic's Spy Smasher (1942), and was a regular in Hollywood's B factories of the 1940s (he made thirteen pictures at PRC Studios alone, three of them "Michael Shayne" mysteries). Television took advantage of Bryar's talents in a number of guest spots, including the unsold pilot The Family Kovack (1974). He had somewhat better job security as a regular on the 1965 dramatic series The Long Hot Summer, playing Sheriff Harve Anders, though he and everyone else in the cast (from Edmond O'Brien to Wayne Rogers) were back haunting the casting offices when the series was cancelled after 26 episodes. One of Paul Bryar's last screen appearances was as one of the card players (with future star Sam Elliott) in the opening scene of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969).
Larry Thor (Actor) .. Police Surgeon

Trivia: Larry Thor was a sometime movie and television actor who started his professional entertainment career doing voice work, as an announcer on radio. Born in 1916, he grew up in Lundar, Manitoba, Canada, in what was basically an Icelandic village. He broke into radio in 1937, working at various stations for a decade after, until he arrived in Los Angeles in 1946. His rich, resonant voice gave him a career as an announcer, with occasional bits of acting. In the early '50s, he crossed over into film work when he played a sports announcer in the 20th Century Fox baseball biopic The Pride of St. Louis, telling of the life of pitcher Dizzy Dean (Dan Dailey).Although he occasionally played announcers in subsequent movies, including The Kid From Left Field (1953) and Zero Hour! (1957), Thor also moved into straight acting roles, usually smaller or supporting parts where he could play authority figures -- he was in two key early productions of Roger Corman, Five Guns West and The Fast and the Furious. Once in a while, Thor also got to play a major role, such as that of Major Coulter, the military physician in Bert I. Gordon's The Amazing Colossal Man (1957), whose death scene is one of the highlights of the movie's low-budget thrills.Much of Thor's career from the mid-'50s onward, especially after the decline of radio, was spent on television, in every kind of series from M Squad to My Three Sons. He also made recordings, especially of children's records, and was still doing announcing work in documentaries and industrial films right into the 1970s. Typical of the odd arc of his career, a result of his specialized talent, in 1970, the same year in which he appeared in Fox's Tora! Tora! Tora!, he also was the voice of Kakafonous A. Dischord in The Phantom Tollbooth. He passed away in 1976.

Trivia: Slim, sloe-eyed, dark-haired actress Gail Patrick was once the 21-year-old Dean of women students at her alma mater of Howard College, and briefly studied law at University of Alabama. She was brought to Paramount during that studio's nationwide contest to find an actress to play "the Panther Woman" in Island of Lost Souls (1932). Patrick lost this role to Kathleen Burke, but won a Paramount contract, and co-starred in the studio's horror film follow-up to Island of Lost Souls, 1933's Murders in the Zoo. She played several leading roles -- including a lady lawyer in Disbarred (1939) -- but was more effective as a villainess or "other woman"; her elegant truculence was one of the highlights of the 1936 screwball comedy My Man Godfrey. Patrick's third husband was Thomas Cornwall Jackson, literary agent of Perry Mason creator Erle Stanley Gardner. Retired from acting since 1948, Patrick and her husband co-produced the popular Perry Mason TV series, which ran from 1957 through 1966. She made a brief return to acting as a judge in the final Mason episode, which also featured Erle Stanley Gardner himself in a bit role. After her 1969 divorce from Jackson, Patrick attempted to revive Paul Mason for television in 1973, but Monte Markham proved an inadequate substitute for Raymond Burr. Gail Patrick Jackson died of leukemia in 1980.
Harold Swanton (Actor)

Trivia: A Hollywood child actor from 1927, Dick Winslow showed up in dozen of early talkies as page boys, messenger boys, and office boys. One of Winslow's few "named" roles was Joe Harper in the 1930 version of Tom Sawyer. Adept at several musical instruments, Winslow graced many a film of the 1940s and 1950s, playing everything from picnic accordion players to cocktail pianists. The apotheosis of this stage of Winslow's career was his one-man band in 1965's Do Not Disturb. A veteran of 60 years in the business, Dick Winslow made his last screen appearance as "the Old Man" in 1988's Fatal Judgment.
