Trivia: Rough-hewn American leading man Richard Boone was thrust into the cold cruel world when he was expelled from Stanford University, for a minor infraction. He worked as a oil-field laborer, boxer, painter and free-lance writer before settling upon acting as a profession. After serving in World War II, Boone used his GI Bill to finance his theatrical training at the Actors' Studio, making his belated Broadway debut at age 31, playing Jason in Judith Anderson's production of Medea. Signed to a 20th Century-Fox contract in 1951, Boone was given good billing in his first feature, Halls of Montezuma; among his Fox assignments was the brief but telling role of Pontius Pilate in The Robe (1953). Boone launched the TV-star phase of his career in the weekly semi-anthology Medic, playing Dr. Konrad Steiner. From 1957 through 1963, Boone portrayed Paladin, erudite western soldier of fortune, on the popular western series Have Gun, Will Travel. He directed several episodes of this series. Boone tackled a daring TV assignment in 1963, when in collaboration with playwright Clifford Odets, he appeared in the TV anthology series The Richard Boone Show. Unique among filmed dramatic programs, Boone's series featured a cast of eleven regulars (including Harry Morgan, Robert Blake, Jeanette Nolan, Bethel Leslie and Boone himself), who appeared in repertory, essaying different parts of varying sizes each week. The Richard Boone Show failed to catch on, and Boone went back to films. In 1972 he starred in another western series, this one produced by his old friend Jack Webb: Hec Ramsey, the saga of an old-fashioned sheriff coping with an increasingly industrialized West. In the last year of his life, Boone was appointed Florida's cultural ambassador. Richard Boone died at age 65 of throat cancer.

Trivia: Well-mannered, well-tailored British character actor Tom Helmore made his first film in 1928. He remained in films until the 1960s, nearly always playing men of wealth and property, and nearly never winning the heroine from the hero (e.g. losing Lauren Bacall to Gregory Peck in Designing Women [1957]). Helmore's most famous role was as Gavin Elster, the outwardly concerned husband of mental case Kim Novak, in Hitchcock's Vertigo (1958). A member in excellent standing of Hollywood's unofficial "British colony," Tom Helmore counted among his best friends actor Boris Karloff -- and that was even after Karloff married Helmore's ex-wife Evelyn.

Trivia: Yale-educated actor Murvyn Vye was closely associated with the Theatre Guild in the 1940s, originating the role of Jigger Craigin in the Guild's 1945 staging of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel. Vye brought his froglike countenance to Hollywood in 1947. In his first film, Golden Earrings, he played the gypsy who warbled the title song. Vye went on to play a dour Merlin in the Bing Crosby version of A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1949) before returning to Broadway. He was cast as the Kralahome in Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I, but left the production during tryouts when his songs were cut. Back in Hollywood, Vye continued essaying sinister film and TV roles throughout the 1950s. For reasons best known to himself, he went unbilled in the important part of Joan Collins' martini-imbibing husband in Leo McCarey's Rally Round the Flag, Boys (1959). In 1961, Vye was cast as the hero's general factotum in The Bob Cummings Show (not to be confused with Love That Bob), an assignment which lasted all of 13 weeks. Murvyn Vye's last film was the independent, Manhattan-based Andy (1965).

Trivia: Before his motion picture career DeCorsia was a radio actor ("March of Time," "That Hammer Guy," "The Shadow"). He made his film debut in 1948 with The Lady from Shanghai. DeCorsia generally played lead villain roles (Enforcer, Naked City, Slightly Scarlet) or he occasionally parodied those villainous types (Kettles in the Ozarks, Dance With Me Henry).

Trivia: A former teacher, American actor Clinton Sundberg realized from the moment he set foot on stage that he'd never be a romantic lead, but settled -- profitably, as it turned out -- for character work. Sundberg's prim demeanor and light, throaty voice enabled him to carve a significant Hollywood niche as desk clerks and minor bureaucrats, though he was capable of coarse villainy, as proven in Undercover Maisie (1949). The actor worked most often at MGM throughout his career, from 1946's Undercurrent to 1963's How the West Was Won. Probably the closest he got to a full lead was as corpulent private eye J. Scott Smart's "Man Friday" in the enjoyable Universal low-budget mystery The Fat Man (1951). Clinton Sundberg contributed numerous voice-overs to commercials of the '70s, and was seen to good advantage in one advertisement as an unflappable tailor outfitting a large, talking Seven-Up bottle!
