Trivia:
Worked as stage actor, most notably at the Indian National Theatre, before turning to cinema. Won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his performances in Sastak (1970) and Koshish (1972). Two-time winner of the Filmfare Best Actor Award, out of a total of eleven nominations. A stamp bearing his face was issued by India Post in 2013. As many people in his family, he suffered from a heart condition, which would eventually prove fatal.
