Daughter of Tommy Douglas, the Canadian politician who served as premier of Saskatchewan from 1944 to 1961. Did voice-over work for spaghetti Westerns while living in Italy during the early 1960s. Active in the civil rights and anti-Vietnam War protest movements of the late 1960s and early '70s, when she lived in California. Arrested in 1969 for allegedly attempting to procure hand grenades for the Black Panthers; the charges were eventually dropped. Awarded the Order of Canada in 2003. Spokesperson for the Canadian Health Coalition, which advocates in favor of universal heath care.
