Has Type 1 Diabetes and participated in a medical trial that tested an artificial pancreas. Is interested in military history and collects weapons from the First and Second World Wars. Almost gave up acting to become a welder prior to landing his big break in War Horse in 2011. One of his grandfathers was Sir Ralph Lilley Turner, an eminent linguistics specialist and university administrator.
