Spent much of his childhood touring with his mother, who was a jazz singer. Moved from New Jersey to England with his mother and stepfather when he was 6. Launched his writing career when he was commissioned to adapt The Odyssey into a stage play. Starred in a production of Simply Heavenly at the Young Vic. Wrote and appeared in the play City Hall, which aired on television in 2012 as part of the Playhouse Presents series on Britain's Sky Arts 1. His wife, actress Olivia Williams, starred in the production.

Studied acting at the American Repertory Theatre. Was president of the Hasty Pudding Theatricals while in college. Teaches and coaches at Stan Kirsch Studios in Hollywood.
