Started his career in radio, where he gained widespread popularity as a host. Debuted in Railway Platform (1955) and rose to fame through his appearance in Mother India (1957). Was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, in 1968. Became the sheriff of Mumbai in 1981. Launched his son Sanjay's career with Rocky (1981). Founded the Nargis Dutt Foundation in memory of his wife in 1981, which supports cancer research. Went to Japan in 1988 to appeal for global disarmament and to protest for the same, he walked from Nagasaki to Hiroshima. Won the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996. Was Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports in the Indian government from 2004 until his death in 2005.
