Career has spanned over 60 films and six decades. First ever winner of the Filmfare Best Actor award in 1954 for Daag, an award he won a record eight times. Took a break from acting from acting from 1976-1981, returning in Kranti (1981). Awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian award, in 1991, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994, for his contributions to Indian cinema. Last appeared on screen in a dual role in Qila (1998).
