Took a break from acting from acting from 1976-1981, returning in Kranti (1981). Awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian award, in 1991, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994, for his contributions to Indian cinema. Last appeared on screen in a dual role in Qila (1998).
