Trivia: Chose acting as profession despite family pressure towards continuing family business. Began with stage acting in plays during Navratri festivals. Joined Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA) during 1953 and was associated with it for 15-16 years. Dubbed for Mohammed Al Fardin's Hindi dialogues in Subah-O-Shaam (1971) and for the main villain in Gehri Chaal (1973). Had a life-threatening experience by being caught up in a river whirlpool during a shoot of the Bollywood film Coolie (1983) in which he had played the role of Amitabh Bachchan's father. Renowned for playing Bollywood supporting roles of a father, relative, uncle, police officer, doctor and villain. Is a father of four daughters. Starred in shelved films like Pyar Se Pyara Hai Tu (2000), Masoom Chudail (1999), Mohabbat Zindabad (1997), Kunju-Chanchalo aka Aaja Mere Mehboob (1990), Kashti Aur Kinara (1990), Tere Pyar Main (1999), Sisakte Jism (1990). Acted in over 270 films spanning from early 1960s to the early 2000s. Passed away on 27 October 2007 in Mumbai following a cardiac arrest after suffering from severe diabetes and high blood pressure. Production company called Satyen Kappu Film Productions was established by his family in 1994.

Trivia: Met his would-be wife Sudha at Jaipur Radio Station where they worked together. Directed Tuglaq, a play written by Girish Karnad in 1965 which was first staged in The National School of Drama. Fell in love with Sudha while they worked together in plays at National School of Drama (NSD) and they married after nine years of waiting in 1968. Was nicknamed Binnuji at home by his wife because one of his names was Binod. Started a theatre group Dishantar along with his wife, which did so well that tickets had to be sold in black for almost every show. Began his film career in 1971 with Mani Kaul's Ashad Ka Ek Din, soon followed by Gulzar's Koshish in 1972. Was two years younger than Bollywood actor Jeetendra, but played the role of his father in films. Led the National School of Drama Repertory set up in 1964 in its early years. Worked in 31 films with Rajesh Khnana as the lead hero. Was going to direct a film titled Aadhe Adhure which was shelved after he had a fall out with its producer Basu Bhattacharya. Is the father of the Bollywood actress Ritu Shivpuri and assistant director Vineet Shivpuri.
