Ship's mate Edmond Dantés prevents a sea disaster and is up for promotion, but his shipmates conspire against him, and he is taken away from his wedding to Mercedes and thrown in prison. There, he meets Abbé Faria, who reveals a plan of escape culminating in retrieving a treasure. But Faria is killed, and Dantés manages a daring escape alone. Recovering the treasure and creating the Count of Monte Cristo persona, Dantés embarks on a plan of revenge and reuniting with his true love.
