Born as first son to a mill worker father and a housemaker mother who lived in a modest community house (chawl) in Byculla, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. Completed his high school education from 7th to 10th standard at a boarding school in Deolali – a hill station in Nashik, Maharashtra – and returned to Mumbai for higher schooling. Did a Diploma in Business Management after graduating in Chemistry. Worked as a bank clerk for 11 years at various branches of Central Bank of India in Maharashtra. Made his acting debut on television for the play Dnyan-deep – telecast on Doordarshan, India's national channel. Made his silver screen acting debut in Andha Yudh (1987). Had rejected the role of Gracy Singh's father in Lagaan (2001) that had been nominated for the Oscars. Was married for 24 years until his wife departed after suffering from breast cancer. Plays the main lead in the longest running television series C.I.D. that is a part of the Guinness Book of World Records. Sponsored education for several children through a philanthropic organisation.
