Trivia: Actress Betty White got her start in local Los Angeles television as the "telephone girl" for video emcee Al Jarvis. By early 1950 she was one of the stars of the daily, five-hour series Hollywood on Television. One of the highlights of this program was a husband and wife sketch titled "Life With Elizabeth," which when committed to film and syndicated nationally in 1953 became White's first starring TV sitcom. She went on to headline her own network variety series in 1954, then co-starred with Bill Williams in the weekly TV domestic comedy Date With the Angels (1957), which without Williams was retitled The Betty White Show in early 1958. Trivia: During her nine-year (1975-1984) tenure as Barbara Cooper on TV's One Day at a Time, Valerie Bertinelli grew from a chubby, awkward 15-year-old with only a smattering of bit-part credits into a polished actress and bona fide sex symbol. When Bertinelli "married" her One Day co-star Boyd Gaines in a 1982 episode, the ratings went through the roof, while many a male viewer's heart sank. One year earlier, Bertinelli had been a bride for real; her marriage to rock star Eddie Van Halen was kept under wraps by the series' producers for fear of damaging the actress' "Little Miss Perfect" image. A native of Buffalo, NY, who first found work in front of the cameras as a Wilhelmina model in the 1970s, the Ohio Wesleyan University alum would later work for New York congressman Jack Kemp following her graduation. Subsequently gracing the catwalks of New York, Paris, and Madrid, it was a small role in the 1978 comedy How to Pick up Girls that provided the aspiring actress with her first screen break. Though she would appear in a few theatrical releases such as Scrooged (1988) during the 1980s, most of her work came with made-for-television features and such series as Kate and Allie and Anything But Love. Trivia: A distinctive-looking, grey-haired British character actor, John Mahoney worked onstage in his teens, and moved to the U.S. at 19. In his mid-30s, while employed as an editor in Chicago, he decided to renew his interest in acting, and he enrolled in classes at a local theater co-founded by playwright David Mamet; he landed a role in a Mamet play and left his job for the part. At the urging of actor John Malkovich, he went on to join Chicago's celebrated Steppenwolf Theater; eventually he appeared in more than 30 plays. For his work in the Broadway play House of Blue Leaves he won a Tony and a Clarence Derwent Award. For his work in the lead role of Orphans (on Broadway and in Chicago) he won a Theater World Award. He still lives in Chicago, and maintains his connection with Steppenwolf. Mahoney debuted onscreen in Mission HIll (1982), but his screen breakthrough came in his fifth film, Barry Levinson's popular comedy Tin Men (1987); afterwards he went on to better parts in more noteworthy movies, and has avoided typecasting in a busy screen career. Trivia: A veteran of films, television, and the Las Vegas stage, musician Steve Lawrence is probably most recognizable to film audiences as The Blues Brothers' Maury Sline. Born Sidney Leibowitz in Brooklyn, New York, on July 8, 1935, Lawrence began writing music at the age of 16 and broke into television as a performer on Steve Allen's Tonight Show in the mid-'50s. A fixture of various TV variety shows throughout the '60s, including The Carol Burnett Show, Lawrence entered the realm of film cult stardom with his role in The Blues Brothers (1980), and went on to do sporadic screen work for the next couple of decades. In addition to supporting roles in Blues Brothers 2000 (1998), the boxing drama Play It to the Bone (2000), and the crime mystery The Yards, Lawrence had a recurring role on the TV sitcom The Nanny. Along with his wife Eydie Gorme, whom he married in 1957, Lawrence was a fixture of the Las Vegas stage for a long time, where he and Gorme often performed as the supporting act for Frank Sinatra.

Trivia: A comedian who specializes in impressions (with a regular repertory of celebrity impersonations at his disposal, including Dr. Phil McGraw, Jack Nicholson, John Madden, Robert De Niro, and others), Frank Caliendo first made his mark as a regular multi-season contributor to the Saturday Night Live-style prime-time sketch comedy review MADtv. Trivia: The versatile American character actor Mark Derwin initially launched himself as a late '80s soap opera heartthrob, with two roles that many housewives will count as unforgettable: that of A.C. Mallett on Guiding Light, and that of Adrian Hunter on The Young and the Restless. Allegedly a rebel during his early years, Derwin evinced limited interest in high school sports and attended the State University of New York at Cobbleskill, where he engaged in some undisclosed acts of "bad boy" mischief that prompted the university to boot him out. Stints at IBM (where his family worked), at a nursing home, and in carpentry and landscaping followed, but the actor felt a deep and lingering dissatisfaction that prompted him to seek out his one great passion: acting. Commercials followed -- for Nike, Toyota, Nissan, Fiesta Cigarettes (on Mexican television) -- then the soap opera period, which Derwin used as a kind of personalized workshop to develop and hone his acting craft. Prime-time viewers will invariably associate Derwin with his collaborations with Bonnie Hunt. Beginning in the mid-'90s, he joined the casts of two of the actress/comedienne's sitcoms: the short-lived Bonnie Hunt Show (1995) and the slightly more successful Life With Bonnie (2002). After that program received the pink slip, Derwin branched out into big-screen features.
