Father was in the foreign service and the family moved around a lot, living in Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, Nigeria, Panama, London and Washington, DC. Sang at New York restaurants with a jazz musician while in college and did backup vocals for a number of recording artists. Was awarded the Robin Williams Scholarship that covered tuition for her final two years at the Juilliard School, and while there, once played Mark Antony in Julius Caesar. Skipped her 2007 graduation from Juilliard to shoot The Express (2008), the sports bio about Heisman-winning running back Ernie Davis. In 2012, she was awarded the Beah Richards Rising Star Award at the Pan African Film Festival. Portrayed baseball star Jackie Robinson's wife, Rachel, in the 2013 sports biopic 42. Involved in the charitable organization ASTEP (Actors Striving to End Poverty).
