Biography
About David Abraham Cheulkar
Was the youngest son of Dina Cheulkar and Abraham Cheulkar, who was a Railways Engineer in Mumbai, India. Is a descendant of India's Jewish Bene Israel community – a Marathi speaking group of Jews who have been living in India for many centuries. Graduated with a B.A. in 1930 from Wilson College in Mumbai.
Worked simultaneously for six years while studying at the Government Law College in Mumbai, India. Got his first role as an elderly professor in the movie Zambo on 15th January 1937. Was actively associated with Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA).
Was one of the best anchors and compère for various awards shows and various events during 1954 to 1979. Had become India's Olympic Games representative. Was awarded the Padma Shri Award by the government of India during 1969.
Suffered a serious heart attack in 1972. Migrated with his niece and nephew to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 1979 and took up acting in the country. Remained a bachelor till he passed away on January 2, 1982 having suffered a stroke six days ago.
