Starred in more than 180 films in a career spanning over 40 years. Debuted as a child actress in the Telugu film Rangula Ratnam (1966), but made her lead debut in Sawan Bhadon (1970). Won the National Film Best Actress award for her performance in Umrao Jaan (1981).
Two-time recipient of the Filmfare Best Actress Award - for Khubsoorat (1980) and Khoon Bhari Maang (1988). Awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, in 2010.
