Left school early to tour Europe with an acting troupe sponsored by the State Department. Worked as an English teacher in Beirut and translated pornography in Mexico. Won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play The Shadow Box in 1977.
Played Claudius in the 1992 Broadway revival of Hamlet, opposite James Cromwell as Polonius and Elizabeth McGovern as Ophelia. Appeared in the 2010 Broadway revival of A View From the Bridge, which was Scarlett Johansson's Broadway debut.
