Started his career as a room service guy at the Taj Mahal Hotel. Worked in his family's bakery, and as a photographer, before turning to acting. Was encouraged by Shiamak Davar to audition for Alyque Padamsee to become an actor.
Bagged a role of Mahatma Gandhi in Feroze Khan's Mahatma Vs Gandhi in 1998 when he weighed 98kg. Debuted in Everybody Says I'm Fine! (2001).
Most acclaimed theater work is I am not Bajirao in 2005 and it went on for a decade. For his role in 3 Idiots (2009) he won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award. His first Telugu film is Attarintiki Daredi (2013).
