Is the son of two doctors and has a twin sister, Nicky. As a child, was a member of the Scottish Youth Theatre. In 2001, began a three-season run on the popular British soap opera Coronation Street.
Played the title role in the BBC drama Young James Herriot, about the early years of the renowned veterinarian-author, and attended the same school as Herriot. His character in the BBC sci-fi series The Fades is English, so to work on the accent he would go into various London shops and try to speak as a local.
