Made her debut with the movie Bekhudi (1992); she was still in school at that time, but quit studies soon after the release of the movie to focus on her acting career. The success of her movie Baazigar (1993) made her an overnight star. Launched an online showbiz portal www.cineexplore.com in 2000, heading it as the CEO.
Honoured with the Karmaveer Puraskaar, a national award recognising social justice and citizen action, in 2008, commending her services to the society. Won a Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, in 2011 for her contribution to art and cinema. Became an ambassador and advocate of Lifebuoy's Help a Child Reach 5 campaign in 2013.
Holds the directorial position at Devgn Entertainment and Software. A goodwill ambassador of the Britain-based Loomba Trust, which aims to educate widows' children, with a lot of focus on India. Also works with Shiksha, an NGO promoting children's education.
