Decided to learn karate to defend himself against a school bully. Began training in martial arts when he was 7; holds black belts in Kyokushin karate and Brazilian jujitsu. Says his MMA hero is Randy Couture.
Was named Fighter of the Year in 2009 by Sports Illustrated. Was named Canadian Athlete of the Year two straight times by Rogers Sportsnet, beating out Sidney Crosby. Appears in the action films Death Warrior (2008) and Never Surrender (2009).
