The son of an insurance broker dad and a librarian mum. His brother has a Ph D in psychology. His parent's magician friend, who had studied with mime Marcel Marceau, inspired him to pursue acting.
After university, suffered from depression while touring Australia performing in a play. Directed the play Ninja, which was written by his wife Tamara Asmar, at the Old Fitzroy Theatre, Sydney in 2005.
