Was the 1946 junior backstroke national swimming champion; narrowly missed selection for the Australian Olympic Team two years later. At age 16, his self-portrait entitled "Portrait of a Schoolboy" was selected to be hung at the Art Gallery of NSW, and was a finalist for the 1947 Archibald Prize. Moved to the U.K. in 1951 to pursue an art career.

Invented a percussion instrument, the wobble board, which he incorporates into much of his music. Wrote the song "Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport" in 1960, which went on to become a No. 1 hit in Australia, the U.K. and the U.S. In 1967, became a household name with The Rolf Harris Show.

Appointed a Member of the British Empire in 1968; advanced to Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2006. In 1989, was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia; was advanced to Officer of the Order of Australia in 2006 for services to performing and visual arts and to charities and to international relations through promotion of the Australian culture. Painted the official portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in 2005.

Found guilty in June 2014 of 12 counts of indecent assault against four girls, which occurred from the 1960s to the 1980s; he was subsequently stripped of his ARIA Hall of Fame membership and his BAFTA fellowship.
