Began his broadcasting career at Ulster Television in 1979 as a farming reporter. Started working for GMTV in 1993, making it the most watched morning show (with Fiona Phillips) for eight and a half years until his departure. Joined Sky News in 2005 to present Sunrise.
Supports Manchester United and spoke at the funeral of footballer George Best in 2005. Was awarded an honorary degree by Queen's University Belfast in 2006. Started presenting ITV daytime programme This Morning in 2006.
Writes a column for The People newspaper and published his autobiography This Is My Life in 2006. Is a patron of Dogs Trust, a charity from which he adopted his dog Maggie in 2011. Supported the Dementia Friends campaign in 2014.
Became a celebrity ambassador for Variety GB in 2015. In 2016, became a patron of Northern Ireland Kidney Patients' Association. Was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to broadcasting in the 2018 New Year Honours.
