Her mother is Iranian and her father Ghanaian. Developed an interest in science as a child and didn't become interested in acting until her late teens. Had a minor role as a character who was killed in a 2006 Doctor Who episode, and was brought back the following year as the Doctor's companion, Martha Jones.
Portrayed the Doctor's first black companion on the series. Having studied dance and practised horse riding, martial arts and gymnastics at university enabled her to perform more physically arduous action scenes in the 2006 film Adeola. Nominated for a National Television Award for Doctor Who in 2007.
Named Best Newcomer at the 2007 Glamour Women of the Year Awards. Won the 2007 People's Choice category for 'Female TV Star' in the 5th annual Screen Nation Film and TV Awards. Was handpicked by producer Dick Wolf to star in Law & Order: UK.
Has a tattoo of the Persian world "raha" on her arm, which means "free" and symbolises her ancestry. Endorses the fairtrade company Divine Chocolate. Hosted a Doctor Who-themed section of the BBC Proms in 2009.
Is a Catholic but not a regular church-goer, saying doing good demonstrates her belief in God and expresses Catholic Christianity.
