Son of Jamaican parents who emigrated to England in the 1950s.
One of eight siblings.
Played tennis on the junior professional circuit.
Joined the Royal Court Youth Theatre at the age of 17.
At the age of 24, became the first actor of African descent to play Othello in Othello on the main Royal Shakespeare Company stage since Paul Robeson did 40 years earlier.
In 2006, participated in the television dance contest Strictly Come Dancing, he partenered with Camilla Dallerup and was eliminated in week six.
