Parents, Colin and Marilyn, performed as a Country and Western duo called The Daltons. Studied at the Joyce Mason School of Dance in Scunthorpe. Was a member of the National Youth Music Theatre from 1995 to 2001 and performed a number of lead roles in productions such as Bugsy Malone and Pendragon.
Made her professional debut at the age of 14 in a production of Annie, playing the lead role. Performed in Shakespearean plays A Midsummer Night's Dream and Taming of the Shrew at the Open Air Theatre in London's Regents Park in 2006. Has performed in the West End musicals Little Shop of Horrors (2007), Legally Blonde (2010) and Funny Girl (2016).
Played Bridget Jones in a workshop for a musical version of Bridget Jones' Diary in 2010, but a proper version of the show never happened. Brother Damien is a member of the band Indie Manned. Appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2015 for services to drama.
Released her debut album, Sheridan, in 2017 and a second album, A Northern Soul, in 2018. Has received two Olivier Awards, a BAFTA, a National Television Award and a Broadcasting Press Guild Award, as well as two International Emmy Award nominations.
