Besides his mother tongue Kannada, he speaks Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi, Hindi and English. Changed his name from Rai to Raj following the advice of director K. Balachander.
Having established himself as a South Indian cinema superstar, he made his Bollywood debut with Shakti - The Power (2002). Winner of five National Film Awards, one of which as Best Actor for Kanchivaram (2008). Five-time Filmfare Awards South winner.
