First became interested in acting while taking part in a school production of Kes at the Oldham Theatre Workshop. Lost both of his parents to cancer when he was a teenager. First appeared in Coronation Street in 1981 as paper boy Neil Grimshaw for 12 episodes.
During the 1980s, became a gay icon due to wearing skinny jeans and a moustache which he decided to grow because he looked too young. Became the first British actor to have his ear pierced while on screen.
