Biography
About Paintal
Is the son of a cameraman who worked at the renowned Pancholi's Empire Talkie Distributors of Lahore. Used to work as a model for his father who had opened a photography studio after India's partition. Was passionate about joining the Indian army for which he passed the National Defence Academy (NDA) exams while simultaneously passing the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) exams.
Joined Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, during 1966 to learn acting. Received a government scholarship of Rs. 75 to continue his education at FTII while his father had lost his business and job.
Became a mime artist in his earlier days and was offered Rs. 50 per show. Got his first role in a film Umang (1970) after a coincidental rendezvous with filmmaker Atma Ram, the brother of the legendary Bollywood actor Guru Dutt.
Donned the guise of a woman, along with co-star Rishi Kapoor, in the Bollywood film Rafoo Chakkar (1975). Became the Head of the Acting Department of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in 2008. Co-starred with son Hiten Paintal in the sitcom Partners: Trouble Ho Gayi Double (2017).
Adopted 55 stray dogs and rehabilitated them with food and medicine.
