Patti McCarty portrait

A pretty brunette, Patti McCarty was undoubtedly the hardest working heroine at low-budget PRC from 1943 to 1946, appearing in a total of nine Westerns. According to her publicity, the California native had performed double duty as Dorothy Lamour's secretary and as a show girl at Earl Carroll's popular Hollywood nightspot prior to entering films with Columbia in 1941. After two years of little more than cheesecake duty and walk-ons, she signed with PRC for the 1943 James Newell/Dave O'Brien "Northwestern" Fighting Valley, proving popular enough to remain with the ramshackle little studio for close to three years.

One of her Western co-stars for PRC was former swimming champion Larry "Buster" Crabbe, playing a very benign and highly fictitious Billy the Kid. Working in PRC oaters was about as low as one could get in World War II Hollywood (PRC was not nicknamed "Pretty Rotten Crud" for nothing!) and McCarty found more pleasure entertaining with the USO. Leaving Los Angeles for Honolulu, HI, after her final Crabbe Western, Outlaws of the Plains (1946), she later became a representative for a newspaper agency.
