Has Sephardic Jewish and Syrian Jewish ancestry, and is of Russian Jewish descent.
Was raised in New York with his older brother, and filmmaking partner, Josh Safdie.
Had aspirations of becoming a physicist before becoming a filmmaker.
Co-founded the creative collective Red Bucket Films with his brother Josh Safdie, Alex Kalman, Sam Lisenco, Brett Jutkiewicz, and Zachary Treitz, while attending Boston University.
Made his feature film directorial debut with the 2009 comedy-drama Go Get Some Rosemary, which he co-directed with his brother Josh Safdie.
Formed the independent film production studio Elara Pictures with Josh Safdie, Sebastian Bear-McClard, Ronald Bronstein, and Oscar Boyson in 2014.
