Trained classical dancer. She started learning classical dance at the age of four. Waited tables, working as a waitress in Singapore, to earn some money to help her while she studied there, living off a meager allowance from home.
Started her Bollywood career as an assistant director for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Black (2005). Made her acting debut with the movie Saawariya (2007). Took over her father's production house Anil Kapoor Film Co.
Ltd in 2008. She and her sister run the company together now. Became the brand ambassador of Spice mobiles in 2010.
In 2011, was named the brand ambassador of the year at the NDTV Good Times Gadget Guru Awards. Won the Cosmopolitan Fun Fearless Female Best Dressed Award in 2012 and the Vogue Beauty of the Year Award in 2013. Featured in Coldplay's "Hymn for the Weekend" from their album A Head Full of Dreams in 2016.
Bagged the Hindustan Times Most Stylish Portrayal of Woman of Substance Award for her role in Neerja (2016). Gained international recognition as an Indian spokesperson for the French beauty brand L'Oréal. Is a board member at the Asian School of Fashion, a part of Asian Education Group founded by Sandeep Marwah.
Married Delhi-based fashion entrepreneur Anand Ahuja on 8 May 2018.
