Biography
About Lopez Lomong
Taken from his parents at gunpoint by Sudanese government militia at the age of 6, but escaped to a refugee camp in Kenya where he lived for 10 years. Selected as one of nearly 4000 "Lost Boys of the Sudan" who were brought to the United States to resettle in 2001. Adopted by Robert and Barbara Rogers of central New York state.
Obtained U.S. citizenship in 2007. Chosen as the U.S. flag-bearer for the opening ceremonies at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, where he made the 1500m semifinals. Won U.S. titles in the 1500m in 2009 and 2010.
Miscounted the laps in one of his first 5000m races, but recovered to win in 13:11, achieving the required 2012 Olympic standard. Lomong made the team after taking third at the U.S. Trials. Raising money to reconstruct and expand the South Sudan church from which he was kidnapped.
