Began ballroom dancing at the age of 7, and started taking part in competitions a year later. Won gold at the 1983 International Latin American Dance Championship with her first husband Sammy Stopford; the win earned her the nickname "Queen of Latin Ballroom". Her son with second husband 'Corky' Ballas, Mark Ballas, was a regular professional dancer on Dancing with the Stars, the American version of Strictly Come Dancing.
In 1999, opened her home to US-based dancers Julianne and Derek Hough while training them at the Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. Is a 3-time Latin American Champion at the British Open To The World in Blackpool and a 10-time United States Latin American Champion.
