Of Mexican and Russian Jewish descent.
Studied acting, dancing and singing since the age of 6.
Her first stage performace was in The Sound of Music at Santa Fe Springs Community Playhouse when she was 6.
In 2000, won the Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Award in the non-classical voice category, the other finalist was singer Adam Lambert.
After graduating high school, moved to New York to pursue a career in theater.
Was advised to change her surname to Matthews but she refused.
Co-founder of Actor Therapy, an acting training program.
