About Nate Berkus

Interior designer Nate Berkus was born in California and grew up in Minneapolis. His career as a decorator took on a steady climb from the time he graduated from Lake Forest College in 1994, but he experienced a life-changing event ten years later, when, while vacationing in Sri Lanka with photographer Fernando Bengoechea, their resort was hit by the catastrophic 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Berkus survived the event, but Bengoechea came up missing and was later presumed dead.
Berkus appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show the next year to discuss his experience, and the relationship he formed with Winfrey lead to an opportunity in 2007 to host the reality series Oprah's Big Give. Berkus hosted his own show, The Nate Berkus Show, from 2010 to 2012, which was produced by Oprah's Harpo Productions. He was listed as an executive producer on the 2011 Best Picture nominee The Help.
Once his own show ended, he continued to appear as a guest on talk shows, frequently appearing on The Rachael Ray Show.
