Painted houses during the summer to earn money for his first drum set. Developed his drumming style by mimicking John Bonham of Led Zeppelin, his favorite band. Nirvana singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic asked him to join after seeing him play with the punk band Scream.
Was asked to join Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers after playing Saturday Night Live and a few concerts with the classic rockers. Wrote all of the songs and played nearly all of the instruments on the Foo Fighters' eponymous 1995 debut. Has recorded drum tracks for a number of rock bands, including Queens of the Stone Age, Tenacious D, Nine Inch Nails and Garbage.
