Was raised in Sherborne, South West England.
Aspired to be a sports personality until finding his passion for acting around his early teens.
Starred as Sergeant Francis Troy in a 2009 film adaptation of Thomas Hardy's Far From the Madding Crowd, directed by his teacher and high school's Head of Drama, Rosita Clarke. First major TV role was Peter Beale on the BBC soap opera EastEnders from 2013 to 2015.
Made his major motion picture debut playing Archangel in the 2016 superhero film X-Men: Apocalypse.
