When he was young, Riner's parents enrolled him at a local sports club. He played football, tennis and basketball but preferred judo because it is an individual sport. He won World and European Junior titles in 2006.
Riner won a gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London in the men's heavyweight event. He defeated Russia's Alexander Mikhaylin in the final. He defended his Olympics heavyweight title in 2016, defeating Hisayoshi Harasawa in the final.
He is nicknamed "Teddy Bear" or "Big Ted".
