Started judo at age 6. A former training partner of Ronda Rousey. Sexually abused by a former coach, she speaks out on the topic to help other children; she began discussing her story in public late in 2011, around the same time that the Penn State child-abuse scandal became national news.
Coached by former judo Olympian Jimmy Pedro, who won the last U.S. gold at the World Championships before Harrison's in 2010. Won the first-ever Olympic gold medal in judo by an American in 2012, defeating crowd favorite Gemma Gibbons of Great Britain in the 78kg final. Honors in 2012 included Boston Globe Magazine's Bostonian of the Year; one of Glamour's Women of the Year; Boston Sportswriters Association Athlete of the Year; and induction into the New York Athletic Club Hall of Fame.
Came back from knee surgery to compete at 2014 Worlds, losing a semifinal to Brazil's Mayra Aguiar, a key Rio 2016 rival. Launched a fitness clothing line called Fuji by Kayla. Repeated her Olympic success in 2016, winning gold in the 78kg final, and immediately announced her retirement from the sport.
